Kenyon's athletics department will host its annual sports clinics on Sunday, Feb. 5 in observance of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first jazz recording — a 1917 record by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band — and jazz groups at Kenyon are celebrating with a noteworthy slate of performances. A newly formed Kenyon Jazz Faculty Combo will give a special performance Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in Rosse Hall. An exhibit curated by Gund Gallery Associates, “Black Women/Black Lives,” wove together a quilt, historical photos, paintings and underground publications about civil rights to explore the portrayal of black women in modern art and material culture. Work on the exhibit began in the fall, when three associates traveled to the Interference Archive in Brooklyn, New York. Last week, the New York Times ran several stories on economic inequality at American colleges and universities, based on a recent study by the Equality of Opportunity Project. Kenyon was highlighted as one of the 38 institutions with more students from the top 1 percent of the socioeconomic strata than the bottom 60 percent.
