Putting 2020 in Perspective

The Kenyon 2020 strategic plan has been in my sights for about 16 months. The first phase of this effort – developing a set of priorities and a sense of direction for Kenyon’s next five years – is coming to a close.  A draft of the plan is available to the campus community for comment and, during the next few weeks, there will be more opportunities for students, faculty and staff to comment on this work in advance of the April meeting of the Kenyon College Board of Trustees. The Earth Day Challenge Half Marathon and Four Mile at Kenyon is on track to attract a record number of runners and walkers on April 19. Organizers expect registration to exceed the 500 people who typically sign up for the event, which is in its ninth year. President Barack Obama nominated career diplomat Katherine Simonds Dhanani ’81 as the first U.S. ambassador to Somalia in more than 23 years. The post in the African nation has been vacant since 1991, when the embassy closed amid government collapse and civil war. The nomination shows a strengthening connection with Somalia after decades of conflict in the country, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement. Preserving the Path

The three-year Middle Path restoration project enters its second phase in May in the heart of the campus, from just south of the Middle Path gates to the doorstep of Old Kenyon. The restoration is intended to improve universal access and reduce maintenance costs while preserving the look, feel and sound of the path. The project brings to the path a 10-inch, gravel-base layer under a 4-inch seam of stabilized granite gravel with a loose-gravel surface. A semi-permeable bonding agent is used to stabilize…

Leopoldo López ’93 H’07, a political prisoner in Venezuela for one year, has been named the recipient of the Alumni Council Humanitarian Service Award. Can modern battle trauma be healed through classic tales of war’s costs? Bryan Doerries ’98 explores this hypothesis through his ongoing project, Theater of War. The project, and the theater company that performs it, recently were featured in Harper’s Magazine. Doerries co-founded the company, Outside the Wire, in 2009. The Chamber Singers rehearsal brought Andrea Daly ’06 to tears. It was the first time she had heard her composition performed by a live choir. “It sounds beautiful,” she said.
