Having secured a six-figure book deal, Stephanie Danler ’06 is in the midst of fulfilling a classic Kenyon dream. But, for now, she’s still working as a waitress. Three weeks ago, the New York Times featured Danler thanks to her upcoming novel Sweetbitter, which tells the story of a young woman who arrives in New York, works at a restaurant and falls into a love triangle with her co-workers. Siobhan Fennessy, professor of biology and Philip and Sheila Jordan Professor of Environmental Science, is playing an instrumental role in the first-ever national survey on the condition of the nation’s wetlands. A renewal grant of $319,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency guarantees her research will continue for at least three more years. For five weeks, Joan Slonczewski, the Robert A. Oden Jr. Professor of Biology, explored a land far from Gambier: Antarctica. With help from the Oden professorship, Slonczewski headed to Antarctica in November to research how algae and protists (a diverse group of one-celled organisms) impact and are impacted by climate change.  Farmers are some of America’s oldest workers, according to census data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The average age of a U.S. farmer is 58. And the National Young Farmer’s Coalition reported that between now and the year 2030, an estimated half a million — or one quarter — of American farmers will retire.
