E.L. Doctorow ’52 H’76, the much-lauded author of such works as Ragtime, The March and Billy Bathgate, died Tuesday, July 21, at the age of 84. Doctorow was a distinguished Kenyon alumnus whose awards include the 2002 Kenyon Review Award for Literary Achievement, the PEN/Faulkner Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the National Book Award and the National Humanities Medal. Kenyon College will launch its new office of community engagement with Jennifer C. Odenweller as its director. Odenweller, the executive director of United Way of Knox County, will join Kenyon on Oct. 1. Edna Kemboi ’16 is researching cell development this summer for an internship at a graduate school dedicated to bioscience, furthering her interest in improving pharmaceuticals. The molecular biology major is growing cells at the Keck Graduate Institute in Claremont, California, closely examining the process of a single cell dividing. Best-selling author John Green ’00 greeted more than 2,000 fans lined up outside the Palace Theatre in Columbus, Ohio, on July 15 as part of a promotional tour for the upcoming Paper Towns movie. The film, set for release July 24, is adapted from Green’s 2008 hit novel. Columbus was chosen by 20th Century Fox as one of three stops on the “Get Lost, Get Found” tour after Ohio received 80,000 fan votes, the most of any state, to be included on the route. Kenyon strengthened its position as a national leader in Division III athletics with the addition of three NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients this academic year.
