Release: Sept. 11, 2018
GAMBIER, Ohio — This fall, middle schoolers (grades 6–8) will have the chance to have an extraordinary, sensory, hands-on science experience on the Kenyon College campus through two programs: BLAST (for boys) and ATHENAS (for girls). These programs provide students with the opportunity to associate fun with science, be introduced to a community of scientists from all levels (including college and postgraduate), and gain exposure to fields of science and experiments not often taught at the middle or high school level.
The fall session for BLAST (where Boys Learn About Science Together) is Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Kenyon College’s Science Quad, 201 N. College Road. In this first session, called “Water, Wind and Fire,” participants will explore the commonalities between water and air, why planes fly and cars don’t, and why hot air balloons rise. Registration and additional information is available at www.kenyon.edu/blast.
The fall session for ATHENAS (which Aims To Heighten her Experience Near and Around Science) is Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Kenyon’s Science Quad. In this session, called “Bursting, Banging and Bubbling,” participants will have the opportunity to explore the bursting world of chemistry through activities including exploding volcanoes, rockets and make-your-own gusher candy. Registration and additional information is available at www.kenyon.edu/athenas.
Both programs are free for students and include lunch and snacks. Registration is first-come, first-served. For information about either program, contact Kenyon’s Office for Community Partnerships at communityinfo@kenyon.edu or 740-427-5419.
