GAMBIER, Ohio — The Kenyon College Department of Music presents its schedule of spring concerts, featuring styles ranging from jazz classics to Japanese shakuhachi music. Events include:
Friday, Jan. 25: The Angela Waite Student Recital features nine students, who all gave outstanding performances during music juries in the fall semester, at 8 p.m. in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall, 105 College Drive. The biannual recital series was created in 2000 by Charles P. Waite, a Kenyon emeritus trustee, who made a donation in his wife’s name as an anniversary gift. This concert was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, but was rescheduled due to weather conditions.
Saturday, Feb. 2: The Knox County Symphony, directed by Professor of Music Benjamin Locke, performs with winners of the Young Musicians Competition at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall, 105 College Drive. Winning soloists include high school students Sarah Lord, piano, and Josephine Noonan, piano; Kenyon sophomore James Finley, viola; Kenyon junior Anna Deryck, violin; and Kenyon senior Lee Hartley, violin.
Saturday, Feb. 9: The Gund Concert Series presents La Caccina at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall. This women’s vocal ensemble was founded in 2011 in Chicago by Kenyon alumnae who shared a passion for choral music; the ensemble brings expertise and expressive singing to a wide range of musical styles.
Friday, Feb. 15: The Kenyon College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Professor of Music Ted Buehrer, presents its winter program at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Saturday, Feb. 16: The Warner Concert Series, sponsored by the Department of Music and the Charlotte Warner Chamber Music Fund, joins the Asian and Middle East Studies Program in presenting master shakuhachi performer and composer Shawn Renzoh Head at 7 p.m. in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall. Head mixes Japanese traditional music with a distinct Western compositional style to showcase the shakuhachi, an end-blown bamboo flute.
Saturday, March 23: Kenyon’s Chamber Singers, directed by Professor of Music Benjamin Locke, present their spring concert at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Friday, April 12: Kenyon’s Opera and Music Theater Workshop, directed by Adjunct Instructor of Voice Jennifer Marcellana, presents its spring program at 7 p.m. in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall.
Saturday, April 13: The Kenyon College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Professor of Music Ted Buehrer, presents its spring program at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Sunday, April 14: Kenyon’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by Professor of Music Dane Heuchemer, presents its spring concert at 3 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Sunday, April 28: Kenyon’s Community Choir performs with the Knox County Symphony at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall. Professor of Music Benjamin Locke will direct this performance.
Saturday, May 4: The Angela Waite Student Recital, held at 7 p.m. in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall, features select student musicians. The biannual recital series was created in 2000 by Charles P. Waite, a Kenyon emeritus trustee, who made a donation in his wife’s name as an anniversary gift.
