GAMBIER, Ohio — The Kenyon College Department of Music presents its series of spring concerts, featuring genres including jazz, opera and musical theater. Events include:
Friday, Jan. 17: The Gund Concert Series presents 9 Horses at 8 p.m. in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall, 105 College Drive. This improvising chamber ensemble draws from its members’ extensive musical backgrounds for its genre-hopping original compositions.
Saturday, Jan. 18: The Angela Waite Student Recital features eight students, who all gave outstanding performances during music juries in the fall semester, at 7 p.m. in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall. The biannual recital series was created in 2000 by Charles P. Waite, a Kenyon trustee emeritus, who made a donation in his wife’s name as an anniversary gift.
Tuesday, Jan. 21: The Kenyon Jazz Faculty Combo performs “Moanin’,” the classic album by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, at 7 p.m. in Peirce Hall’s Peirce Pub, 201 College-Park St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; seating is limited and will be first-come, first-served.
Tuesday, Feb. 4: Kenyon’s Department of Music presents a cine-concert with renowned klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and pianist Donald Sosin at 7:30 p.m. in Rosse Hall, 105 College Drive. Svigals and Sosin will present their original live score for the 1923 silent film “The Ancient Law,” about a rabbi’s son who runs away to become an actor and is disowned by his father. Svigals, the world’s leading klezmer violinist, is a founder of the Klezmatics. Sosin, a silent film music legend, has performed internationally and at venues including Lincoln Center, MoMA and the Kennedy Center.
Saturday, Feb. 8: The Knox County Symphony, directed by Professor of Music Benjamin Locke, performs with winners of the Young Musicians Competition at 7:30 p.m. in Rosse Hall. Winning soloists include high school students Daniel Pastor, piano, and Caleb Zak and Jack Welter, cellos; Kenyon junior August Corper, violin; and Kenyon sophomores Linnea Mumma and Karolina Edlund, sopranos.
Thursday, Feb. 13: Kenyon’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by John B. McCoy-Banc One Distinguished Teaching Professor of Music Dane Heuchemer, presents a Valentine’s Day concert at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Saturday, Feb. 15: The Kenyon College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Professor of Music Ted Buehrer, presents its winter program at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Sunday, Feb. 16: The Warner Concert Series, sponsored by the Department of Music and the Charlotte Warner Chamber Music Fund, presents Songs for the People by soprano Dione Bennett at 3 p.m. in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall. Bennett’s voice has been heard internationally in opera, recital and oratorio, and she has been featured with orchestras including the Warren Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony, Akron Symphony and Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra.
Saturday, March 21: Kenyon’s Chamber Singers, directed by Professor of Music Benjamin Locke, present their spring concert at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Saturday, March 28: The Gund Concert Series presents DIVA Jazz Orchestra at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall. Fifteen women strong, DIVA exudes the excitement and force found in the tradition of the historic big bands but with an eye toward today’s progressive sound.
Sunday, March 29: Associate Professor of Music Ross Feller presents a faculty recital at 4 p.m. in Rosse Hall. Feller will perform some of his work from his 2018–19 sabbatical.
Sunday, April 5: Kenyon’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by John B. McCoy-Banc One Distinguished Teaching Professor of Music Dane Heuchemer, presents its spring concert at 3 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Friday, April 17, and Sunday, April 19: Kenyon’s Opera and Music Theater Workshop, directed by Adjunct Instructor of Voice Jennifer Marcellana, presents the musical “Ordinary Days” in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall. Friday’s performance will be held at 7 p.m.; Sunday’s performance will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday, April 18: The Kenyon College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Professor of Music Ted Buehrer, presents its spring program at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Sunday, April 26: Kenyon’s Community Choir performs with the Knox County Symphony at 7:30 p.m. in Rosse Hall. Professor of Music Benjamin Locke will direct this performance.
Friday, May 1: Kenyon’s Gamelan Ensemble, under the direction of Maria Mendonça, the James D. and Cornelia W. Ireland Associate Professor of Music, performs at 7:30 p.m. in Rosse Hall.
Saturday, May 2: The Angela Waite Student Recital, held at 7 p.m. in Storer Hall’s Brandi Recital Hall, features select student musicians. The biannual recital series was created in 2000 by Charles P. Waite, a Kenyon trustee emeritus, who made a donation in his wife’s name as an anniversary gift.
