To address the unique issues arising from COVID-19, Kenyon has reviewed its student employment policies and made adjustments for the 2020-21 academic year. Below are recommendations for student employers.
Situations could arise that result in a student employee being unable to report to an on-campus location for work. Therefore, all employers are encouraged to create contingency remote projects that can both provide student employees valuable work-based projects from a remote location and offer value to the campus employer. A few suggestions on how to create remote contingencies are provided below:
Additionally, because Kenyon students are experienced in exploring questions and providing comprehensive summaries, consider framing a project around a specific question you would like explored related to the work of your office or department.
If you would like to consult with the Career Development Office on remote project contingency ideas, email the Office of Student Employment at stuemp@kenyon.edu.
No on-site student employment is permitted during the quiet period, which ends September 4, unless the student employee is considered to be essential. Remote student employment, however, is permitted during the quiet period.
Follow your normal processes for posting a position, but with a few exceptions to note:
Kenyon College encourages you to prioritize student applicants who receive work-study as part of their financial aid package. Information on who receives work-study is often included in the resume or cover letter. Note: Only students who are studying on campus will have work-study in their financial aid package during the semester(s) they are studying on campus..
Because all student employment positions are to only last one semester for the 2020-21 academic year, employers are encouraged to set expectations with their student employees regarding rehiring at the conclusion of their position.
Student employers working with remote employees may need to adapt training to a remote environment. Supervisors are encouraged to leverage the appropriate technology based on their training needs. Some options are provided below:
Employers are encouraged to set certain times they are available for questions as students review the training materials, allowing for simple communication and easy access to support. Check in with your student employees regularly to ensure they understand their projects, expectations and goals for communicating their progress with you.
All of your student employees will need to verify their employment eligibility through the Office of Student Employment. Students working on campus need to present valid forms of identification (see page 3 of the I9 form) to the Office of Student Employment.
If you are studying remotely, you can still verify your eligibility virtually. Email the Office of Student Employment (stuemp@kenyon.edu) to begin this process. You must have received a job offer to be eligible for remote verification.
