Four-year Lords basketball forward Carter Powell ’20 will embark on his post-Kenyon career with an assist from a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
Selected from a pool that spans all three NCAA divisions, each scholarship winner receives a one-time, non-renewable grant of $10,000 for use in an accredited graduate program. A maximum of only 126 scholarships are available each year, divided equally between competitors in men’s and women’s fall, winter and spring sports. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
Powell plans to use his scholarship to enroll in medical school next year, and is considering a career in surgery. During a gap year, he hopes to travel to Peru to work with an organization that supports impoverished communities outside of Lima, helping with infrastructure projects and healthcare clinics — although restrictions on international travel may interrupt those plans.
A native of Greenville, South Carolina, Powell played in 97 career games with 80 starts. He earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference Honorable Mention accolades as a junior in 2018-19. During that campaign, Powell led Kenyon in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.
As a senior, the 6-foot-5 Powell led the team in rebounding, was second in scoring and finished with a team-high 17 blocks. By the end of his career, he ranked seventh in program history with 71 blocks. Additionally, Powell earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court distinction as a junior and was named Kenyon’s NCAC Male Scholar-Athlete award-winner this spring.
Powell, who majored in biology, is the 86th Kenyon student-athlete to receive a postgraduate scholarship. That total ranks second among all Division III institutions.
