Student musicians Day Moon (not to be confused with another celestial Kenyon band) took the Horn Gallery stage to rock the night away with their indie-rock rendition of a holiday favorite. Lead singer Alex Inciardi ’21, bassist Maddy Moriarty ’21 and drummer Molly Walsh ’21 squeezed in the performance between recording sessions at WKCO, where they are working on their first EP.
Before the trio leaves campus next semester to study abroad in London and Edinburgh, we asked them more about their band and the Kenyon music scene.
What's behind the name?
Day Moon comes from the lyrics of "Only World,” by Lomelda. Lomelda is collectively one of our favorite bands and a huge inspiration for us and our music.
How did you form Day Moon?
The three of us have been best friends since our first year at Kenyon. Music was an important part of our lives, but we had never played in a band before. After playing a few cover songs at a Horn show, we were asked to open for the band Soccer Mommy. That launched us into thinking seriously about being a band, and we wrote five songs in four days. It all exploded after that — we wrote more songs the summer going into sophomore year, played dozens of shows all of last year and now are recording our own EP.
Tell us more about your EP.
WKCO is helping us record it. The three of us are studying abroad next semester, so we have been recording all semester to ensure that we can mix and master the recordings while we are away.
How would you describe the Kenyon music scene?
It’s very inviting and accepting — everyone wants one another to succeed, which has created a safe environment to share something as personal as music. The platform the Horn offers is intimate and really captures how tight knit and invested the Kenyon community is, which is something that we love most about Kenyon.
