As a summer intern for the Today Show on NBC, Logan Kinsey '12 co-produced segments, organized concerts, and appeared on camera as a fashion model. "I thought I might be escorting guests from the green room to on-set, but the internship was much more hands-on than I expected," Kinsey said. "I got to sit in on shoots and watch how shows are taped."
She worked side-by-side with producers on story development, editing, and graphics to present a segment that gave co-host Meredith Viera a "technology makeover." She researched introductions for Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood, and Train and helped stage their live performances at Rockefeller Center. On her final day, she modeled an outfit for co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. "That was my goodbye to the most amazing internship I could have ever hoped for," she said.
The Career Development Office opened the door, helping Kinsey write her cover letter and resume. Creative writing opportunities at Kenyon—especially the Creative Nonfiction Workshop taught by Lewis Hyde, Richard L. Thomas Professor of Creative Writing—helped Kinsey, an English major, adapt to the daily demands of producing a network news show. "To be in broadcast news, you definitely need to know how to write, and Kenyon offers so many different writing classes taught by so many different professors that it prepares you for anything," Kinsey said. "Kenyon is so well known for writers that people want to hire Kenyon graduates."
A native of Los Angeles, Kinsey lived in a friend's Manhattan apartment and walked twenty minutes to work at NBC, where the internship gave her the confidence and knowledge to pursue a career in broadcast news. "I feel like I now know how to produce a segment from start to finish," she said.
