Dr. Newton Chun Award created to support faculty development
In 2003, Jon Chun established the Dr. Newton Chun Award in honor of his father to provide faculty members at the College with the opportunity to undertake the scholarship on which their continuing development as teacher-scholars depends. The Dr. Newton Chun Awards support research and artistic projects of exceptional merit and promise. Dr. Newton Chun, a retired surgeon from Dubuque, Iowa, lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother, a Korean picture bride, during the Great Depression. Dr. Chun and his wife, Rose Marie, raised six children of their own in Dubuque, including Jon, who says he believes his father might have equally enjoyed an academic career under other circumstances.
Jon Chun, a 1989 graduate of the College of Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley with a master's degree from the University of Texas, is married to Katherine Elkins, professor in Integrated Program in Humane Studies at Kenyon College.
