James P. Storer ’49 is perhaps best known at Kenyon College for his $1 million gift in 1985, which funded Kenyon’s first fully endowed faculty chair. The gift establishing the James P. Storer Professorship in Asian History came as part of Kenyon’s previous capital campaign, which Storer served as chair. The creation of the Storer Professorship was a catalyst in the development of the Asian Studies Program, bringing together professors from disciplines such as anthropology, history, and religion. Asian studies became one of the College’s most dynamic interdisciplinary concentrations, attracting a good deal of student interest and regularly sponsoring special events including film series, dance and music performances, and visiting speakers.
