Kenyon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble fall concert. The ensemble performs under the direction of Dane Heuchemer, professor of music. The concert will feature a movement of H. Owen Reed's "La Fiesta Mexicana," several movements from Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" and Dmitri Shostakovich's "Folk Dances." Student Assistant Directors Eleanor Welik '20 and Ethan Starr '20 will conduct the ensemble in a performance of David Holsinger's "Scootin' on Hardrock." The concert will conclude with Daniel Bukvich's "Hymn of St. Francis," a fun work in which an initial chorale is used for a set of variations based on various animals. Bukvich combines avant-garde techniques with traditional tonality to bring a murmuration of starlings, a scuttle of crabs, a rhumba of rattlesnakes, a squabble of seagulls, a smack of jellyfish, a buzzing of bees, a drumming of grouse and a flight of starlings to Rosse Auditorium. It's an interesting piece that calls for slide whistles, kazoos, syringes, water balloons, milk bottles, tire chains, tennis balls and more. If you want to see clarinet players and the brasses play just the mouthpiece of their instruments, this work is for you! Rosse Hall
