Courses from before the 2018-2019 school year can be accessed at moodlearchive.kenyon.edu. Moodle archives are available for three years. Professors can access their previous courses from any of these archives to create course backups, which then can be imported into the current year's Moodle site.
CREATING THE BACKUP
- Visit the appropriate Moodle archive. (Moodle archives are only available on campus or through the VPN.)
- Log in with your Kenyon username and password.
- Click the appropriate course title by browsing the Course Categories for your course, or going to your MyMoodle page.
- Click the "Backup" link located under the Administrative block.
- If you don't want every item included in your backup, you may want to uncheck all the items in the course by clicking the "None" link beside the "Include" title. This will allow you to recheck only the items you wish to backup. Attention Faculty Using Turnitin: When creating a backup file for your course, exclude all of your Turnitin assignments. Turnitin assignments cannot be recycled; they will need to be recreated each semester.
- Click the [Continue] button.
- Scroll to the bottom and click the [Continue] button.
- Scroll to the bottom again and click the [Continue] button.
- Click the backup file, which should begin with "backup" and end in ".zip" or ".mbz". This should prompt your browser to download the file.
RESTORING COURSE MATERIALS FROM A BACKUP FILE
- Log into the current year's Moodle site, which is located at moodle.kenyon.edu.
- Click the destination course name under the "Course Overview" section or browse to it in the "Current Courses" list in the bottom left of the page.
- Click the "Restore" link under the "Settings" block.
- Drag the backup file directly from your computer (it starts with "backup" and ends with ".zip" or ".mbz") into the "Files" area of the "Import a backup file" page. It may take a few moments for the file to upload; there is nothing to indicate the progress of the uploaded file until the file name appears in the window.
- Click the [Restore] button once the file name is displayed in the "Files" area.
- Scroll to the bottom and click the [Continue] button.
- Under the "Restore into this course" section, choose to either merge this backup with what is currently on your new course site or choose to restore your course while deleting any content you may have already placed on your new course site.
- Click the [Continue] button under the "Restore into this course" section.
- Click the [Next] button.
- Uncheck the boxes beside any items you do not wish to import.
- Click the [Next] button.
- Scroll to the bottom and click the [Perform restore] button.
- Click the [Continue] button to return to the course page.
