Optional Practical Training (F1 Visa Status)

Kenyon processes a number of Optional Practical Trainings as part of the F1 visa status for students that wish to work in addition to their studies.  Students must have completed one full academic year and the work performed must pertain directly to the student’s major area of study.  During the academic year, students are permitted to work part time; they are permitted to work full time when school is not in session.  Students may complete their work prior to graduation (pre-completion with a maximum of 12 months), or after graduation (post-completion with a maximum of 12 months).  STEM students are eligible for a 17 month extension post-graduation.

Application Process:

• Students must initiate the process by requesting the Designated School Official (DSO) at Kenyon recommend the OPT.  The DSO makes such recommendation by endorsing the student’s Form I-20 and by making appropriate notation in SEVIS.
• Students then file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization Document (EAD), with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If approved, USCIS will issue an EAD to the student.
• The student may begin engaging in pre- or post-completion OPT only after an application has been approved and an EAD has been issued.
