Kenyon College welcomes Guest Researchers, however, Kenyon will not serve as the first reviewer for non-Kenyon researchers.
Guest Researchers, that is researchers who are not students of or employed by Kenyon College, must apply for a Kenyon IRB review and receive approval before they may do any research which involves or potentially involves human subjects who are students or employees of Kenyon College. Guest researchers may not be on Kenyon College property, communicate through Kenyon email distribution lists or college directories or through any Kenyon Department, request Kenyon students or employees to communicate for them through college channels, or be given access to any college records without Kenyon College IRB approval.
Guest researchers must:
- Apply to the IRB (or equivalent authority) of the institution with which they are affiliated. (It might be called an ethics board or ethics committee) Documentation of approval by that board is required and should include the IRB registration and FWA numbers as well as the level of review. Kenyon will not be the first reviewer for non-Kenyon researchers.
- Acquaint themselves with Kenyon College IRB Policies and Procedures.
- Identify and engage a Kenyon host to serve as the on-campus sponsor. If the guest is a college student, their own faculty advisers might be able to suggest a Kenyon faculty member to contact. If you cannot find a Kenyon host, contact the Kenyon IRB Administrator, Jami Peelle peelle@kenyon.edu . She may be able to help you find a host.
- Complete a Kenyon IRB Guest Researcher Application Form. (This will require documentation of the completion of a human subjects protections training course. Kenyon uses CITI. If the guest's institution does not provide a documentable training course, contact the Kenyon IRB Administrator, Jami Peelle peelle@kenyon.edu for help.)
- Submit all application materials to the Kenyon Host first. The Host will review the application, make requests/suggest changes, and when satisfied, sign the assurance page.
- Submit the Kenyon application and supporting materials (including the IRB approval document from the home IRB, documentation of completion of the required training, all recruitment, consent, and debriefing documents) as email attachments to the Kenyon IRB Administrator, Jami Peelle peelle@kenyon.edu . She will notify the applicant of receipt by email within five business days. If contact is not made, assume that email has failed and resubmit or call 740-427-5748. All documents that will be sent or given to research subjects must be sent to the IRB Administrator in the exact formats that will be used. (especially consent forms and debriefing documents.) For online surveys, provide a preview link. Assurance forms (only) may be scanned as .pdf s.
- Be sure your application is complete and understandable, all materials are checked for spelling and grammar, and all required documentation is included. Sloppy, incomplete applications will be returned without review.
- Respond quickly to all requests for additional information or protocol changes.
- DO NOT start any research with Kenyon subjects until you have received a notice of approval.
Timing of Submission
The Kenyon IRB usually meets a few times a semester. Protocols requiring a Full Board Review need to be submitted at least two weeks prior to the next board meeting. Exempt and Expedited reviews may be submitted any time during the semester. Protocols submitted in the summer may take longer. Though the Kenyon IRB tries to complete all reviews in a timely manner, the length of time it takes to review a protocol depends largely on how complete and clear the application is. Reviews are not started until all required materials are received by the administrator.
