Kenyon STEM Alumni

After leaving the hill, Kenyon STEM Alumni have gone on to do a variety of things in the professional world. We've included some alumni profiles to showcase the impressive and diverse careers.

Jamie Gerwitz '04

Biology to Robotic Engineering

Jamie Gerwitz graduated from Kenyon in 2004 with a degree in Biology. His interest in natural systems quickly manifested itself in mechanical systems as he completed a masters program in robotics at The University of Pennsylvania. So far, Jamie has developed a system that puts touch feedback into da Vinci surgical robots, and helped develop a robot that threw the opening pitch at the Phillies baseball game, receiving an interview on ESPN Sports Center. Jamie recalls art, chemistry, and biology courses at Kenyon that helped prepare him for a career in engineering. He hopes his work will contribute to developing medical devices, and the ways in which people use them.

Ilona Martin '01

Psychology to Registered Dietitian

Immediately after completing her Psychology degree from Kenyon, Ilona immediately began a Masters program for Counseling. She worked as a high school guidance counselor, and found herself frequently discussing nutrition with her students; eight years after Kenyon, she began her Masters in Nutrition. After extensive coursework, internships, and exams, she is now a Registered Dietitian at a children’s hospital. Ilona credits Kenyon for preparing her to be a lifelong learner, and helping her smooth transition from working to being a graduate student.

“I feel like my work is meaningful because I can truly see the outcome of my efforts. I have seen epileptic children have a partial or total resolution of their seizures after being placed on a ketogenic diet. I have seen kids with various forms of cancer be able to make it through treatment because we kept them nourished through a feeding tube when they couldn't eat.” -Ilona Martin ‘01
