Faculty Learning Community

The purpose of this faculty learning community is to support the creation and delivery of courses that utilize Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) pedagogy to promote and sustain the development of personal and social responsibility and civic learning. Members will expand their understanding of CEL pedagogy, engage in course re-design in an active peer group, and participate in an on-going support network during course delivery.

Connecting Communities and Curricula

Participants will learn how to implement best practices in CEL, develop a CEL-based syllabus for a course to be taught during academic year 2018-2019, gain both personal and professional connections to other faculty with similar interests, be able to show how CEL can factor into research, tenure, and promotion, and have opportunities to connect with community partners. We expect this yearlong faculty learning community will strengthen curricular coherence by connecting faculty and students to community issues that have both academic and public life dimensions.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Throughout this learning community, you will have the opportunity to learn, develop, and refine your teaching skills through discovering new ideas, engaging in educational exercises, and completing practical steps. The following learning activities are designed to help you develop your understanding of, and your comfort with, the pedagogy of CEL. Strategies will include:

• an introduction to literature on community-engaged learning,
• community discussions and dialogue,
• course development planning,
• presentation of course planning ideas, and
• one-on-one consultations.
