Under the guidance and advice of Joan Slonczewski, Santiago Acero '18 and Kathryn Burrow '18 established the Knox County Hospital Volunteers, a Kenyon student organization that provides volunteer assistance at the Emergency Department of the Knox County Hospital.
Through reflective observation and active participation in the healthcare system, this partnership aims creates supportive and productive relationships among Knox County residents, Knox County Hospital employees and Kenyon students pursuing a career in the medical field.
Notable achievements emerging from this community-engaged learning course experience include: 1) increase number of volunteers from 2-3 to 15-17; 2) providing over 600 hours or community service during the semester; 3) strengthening relationships with Knox County Hospital staff; and 4) gaining direct exposure to the medical field.
