All on-campus student employment positions should be posted in Handshake. This ensures equity and gives you, as the employer, the chance to meet candidates from across the entire campus.
Setting up a Handshake Account
If you do not have a Handshake employer account and will be hiring students, please take the following steps to create an account:
- Email Student Employment at stuemp@kenyon.edu with your name and the name of your department.
- You will receive an email with a link to create your Handshake employer account. You must create a unique password for your Handshake account. Regrettably, employers cannot log in using Kenyon Single Sign-On (SSO).
- During your registration process, you do not need to list your alma mater when prompted. Although it looks like you will have a default graduation date set when you activate your account, it will not be connected to your profile without an alma mater listed.
- The platform will ask if you wish to create emails to be sent by default when you update applicants' statuses. You can always do this at a later date in your settings. To learn more about setting default emails for applicant status changes, view Handshake's tutorial here: About Setting Up Automatic Applicant Status Messaging Preferences.
Posting a Job in Handshake
If you need job title and job description from previously posted positions, you can contact the Office of Student Employment to get a copy.
Please note: if you click out of your job during the drafting process, all of your progress will be lost. Be sure you save your progress before leaving the page. You can return to your position and edit it as often as you want until you receive an applicant. However, once you receive an applicant, you will no longer be able to edit your position information.
- On the employer homepage, click “Post a Job”
- Complete the “Basics” section
- Where should students submit their application?
- Choose “Apply in Handshake.”.
- Select your Company Division (this is your department)
- The options are not alphabetized; begin typing in your department to quickly find it in the drop down list. If your department is NOT listed, email Heidi Norris to have it added (norrish@kenyon.edu).
- Display your contact information to students
- Selecting 'yes' will give students access to your name and allow them to contact you should they have questions about the position.
- Job Type
- Select "On-Campus Student Employment."
- Employment Type
- It is recommended that you hire for a semester then decide whether or not to renew your student's employment for the following year or semester.
- Duration.
- Select "temporary/seasonal."
- Is this a work-study job?
- Selecting "yes" will make your position visible only to students who have work-study included in their financial aid package at Kenyon. Selecting "no" will make your positions visible to all students.
- Complete the “Details” section
- Description
- Write a detailed job description. Use the heading styles to make it aesthetically pleasing.
- Job role(s)
- Select all that apply. This information will be used to highlight the position for students based on their career goals and preferences.
- Approximate salary
- Current on-campus employment pay rates can be found here: Job classification and pay scales.
- Job location
- Enter "Gambier, Ohio."
- Required documents
- Select the documents you wish to review when selecting candidates.
- If you click "other documents" — you will be prompted to enter additional information about the documents you wish to have uploaded, such as a references page.
- Complete the “Preferences” section
NOTE: These are all optional. Including preferences does not prevent any students from applying, including those who do not meet the qualifications, but it could deters students as they will see that they do not meet the desired preferences. If you list preferences, your final candidate packet will indicate which of your candidates meet your preferences and which do not.
- Applicant package recipients
- The platform defaults to sending an applicant packet to the user who is posting the position when the position expires. You can also select to be notified each time a new student applies.
- Complete the “Schools” section
- Select Kenyon College. Do not select any other schools as we only want to post student employment opportunities to Kenyon. Complete the dates you would like to have the posting advertised in the platform.
- Interview on-campus
- Do not check this box. This option is available for recruiters who wish to interview students at the CDO. Interview your candidates at a location most convenient for you.
- Review the posting before publishing
- You will see a preview of your posting, as well as buttons to edit each section. Once you click save, the posting will publish at the date you selected in the “Schools” section (the platform defaults to the current day and time).
Note: To avoid creating a job posting from scratch each time, you can go into your "expired" job postings and choose to “duplicate job.” You will need to update this duplicated copy with new information before posting it as a new position. Quickly find opportunities for your department using the "division" filter.
Once you've entered and submitted your job, it will need to be approved by the student employment office in order to be activated. Once the job is approved, you can paste the URL of your live job posting into emails, which will link directly to the job posting.
