Arranging a job shadow requires considerable planning on behalf of the sponsor and student. Provided here are expectations of each party to create a meaningful job shadow experience. This list serves as a guide, although different arrangements may be agreed upon between the student and the sponsor.
Kenyon will:
- Be a resource to both students and sponsors throughout the application, planning and job shadowing process. Either party may contact the CDO at any time with questions and concerns.
- Offset costs associated with a job shadow–transportation, clothing, food, other expenses–if Waugh Fellowship funds are available and the student meets eligibility requirements.
- Follow up with the sponsors at the end of each year to collect feedback.
- Be available to support student and sponsor should problems or changes arise before, during, or after the job shadow.
Student Will:
- Review the Information for Students page.
- Research their target sponsor to understand the potential job shadow to the best of their ability prior to reaching out.
- Notify sponsor immediately if a need to cancel or reschedule arises.
- Reflect on personal learning goals for the experience.
- Make all plans for housing and transportation.
- Do background research on the sponsor, their role, career path, the organization and any additional research recommended by the sponsor.
- Contact sponsor prior to start of job shadow to confirm all plans.
- Show up to the job shadow on time, in appropriate professional attire, ready to learn.
- Be engaged and provide end-of-day updates to sponsor about their experiences, key takeaways, and questions that arose.
- Attend all scheduled meetings, informational interviews and other activities arranged by the sponsor.
- Upon conclusion of job shadow, debrief the experience with the sponsor, academic advisor, and Kenyon College CDO.
Sponsor Will:
- Have at least one conversation with the student about their interest and learning goals for the job shadow.
- Confirm dates and times for job shadow with the student.
- Notify student immediately if a need to cancel or reschedule arises.
- Work within their company/organization to arrange a valuable job shadow experience that aligns with the student's articulated goals.
- Welcome the student to the organization with a tour or overview, check-in with student periodically throughout the shadow experience, and debrief the experience with the student at the end.
