This summer, Kenyon students went all over the globe for work experiences as diverse as the course catalog. From here in Gambier to Sydney, Australia, they applied their classroom knowledge to the outside world in internships and seasonal positions. Here’s a sampling of how Kenyon students honed their skills, pursued their interests, and built their resumes while taking a break from classes:
Sophie Barrio ’20 worked as a TV Development and Programming Intern for Food Network in New York City, NY. The TV Development and Programming department is responsible for developing the ideas for new linear television content. In describing her role, she shared, “I shadowed one director and got to see every step of the process for developing a new show she’s working on. I got the internship on my own but it was so incredible intersecting with people that knew and loved Kenyon. It’s amazing to see all of the places the Kenyon name will appear once you’re outside the Gambier bubble!”
Jessica Lane ’20 completed two summer internships: one as an Office of Collections Information and Research Intern at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and one as a Peggy Guggenheim Collection Intern in Venice, Italy. Jessica’s experience with research and communication at Kenyon helped her excel in both positions. She says, “[The Smithsonian] really trusted me to work and research independently, and to be able to communicate my research effectively with other scholars and museum institutions. So having the background of working in the Art History department and the Visual Resources Center [at Kenyon] really gave me the best possible training for those situations.”
Alexis Reape ’20 worked as a Marketing Intern at Pearman Media in Sydney, Australia. Her work study experience at the Office of Admissions helped prepare her for experiences in marketing and media: “During my internship, my tasks included booking digital and print media for major clients and I was responsible for preparing material instructions and digital campaign progress reports on a weekly and monthly basis. I was also responsible for following up to make sure the ads actually ran and formulating keyword lists and ad copy within Google Ads and Facebook Ads.”
Below are some additional examples of Kenyon talent translating theory to practice over the summer:
Kate Alexy ’21 – Husbandry Intern at the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, NC.
Sarah Campbell ’20 – Registered Behavior Technician at Trumpet Behavioral Health in Columbus, OH.
Sarah Groustra ’22 – Actor’s Shakespeare Project Intern in Boston, MA.
Rodrigo Avila Hernandez ’21 – Summer Admissions Intern for Kenyon’s Office of Admissions.
Shara Morgan ’20 – Que Sehra Farms Intern in Saint Croix Falls, WI.
Shannon Paige ’20 – Volunteer for New Light in Calcutta, India.
Shawn Ruiz ’21 – Future Faces of Family Medicine Intern in San Francisco, CA.
Muhammad Hamza Saleem ’22 – Marketing and Finance Intern at Askar Oils Private Ltd. in Lahore, Pakistan.
Qiyam Stewart ’21 – Collegiate Intern with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department in Washington.
Additionally, Sriya Chadalavada ’20, Lelia Jo Dusthimer ’19, and Prashant Bhandari ’22 received funding from the Davis Projects for Peace 2019 for their project, Promoting Safe and Eco-Friendly Menstrual Practices in Nepal. Prashant also worked as a researcher for Financial Literacy to Capability Nepal.
