What should you expect to do for Apprentice Teacher (AT) training?
There are two main parts to AT training:
Part I is three hours long, but it is split over a two-day period. It is a combination of short lectures on teaching techniques and micro-teaching. Over two days, you should expect to hear two 30 minute lectures over topics such as how to follow a lesson plan and elicit student responses, how to incorporate culture, and engage students in a range of activities. Then, each day, you should expect to try teaching a five minute pre-prepared micro-lesson in English in front of a small group of peers and a MLL Faculty member who will provide you with feedback! Between the two days, there is an assignment to complete (below).
Part II is language-specific and arranged with a professor in the target language. The professor will contact the candidates with information regarding where and when to meet. The AT candidates will visit an AT class in the target language with the professor. Then after, the candidates will meet with the professor to discuss the observations and/or do micro-teaching in the target language. Professors may use this form give the coordinator information and request help in arranging a meeting room.
How long is my training good for?
Forever! Once you train to be an AT, you do not need to retrain!
