The English Department is the largest in the College. Nearly a quarter of most graduating classes major in English, and about 26 professors teach courses every year. As a large department in a small College, we bring together the best features of different kinds of educational institutions. Like departments at other prestigious liberal arts colleges, the Kenyon English department values small class sizes and personal contact between students and professors.
Like departments at much larger research universities, the Kenyon English department has faculty members with specialization in all areas of British, American, and world literatures written in English. The large size of the department also fosters diverse critical and creative approaches to the study of literature. Each year, the department offers a wide range of courses, from its exciting first-year seminars — the various sections of English 103 and 104 — to small discussion classes focusing on historical periods or literary genres, advanced seminars, and creative writing workshops.
