Comparative World Literature (CWL) is an interdisciplinary programs, drawing from two or more traditional disciplines. Fundamental to the concentration is coursework in both English and Modern Languages & Literatures.
The CWL curriculum has been designed with the following aims:
- Bring into focus the diversity and range of literary production in the world.
- Emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of literary study as it pertains to comparative and World Literature.
- Offer a concerted study in the theories and methodologies of World Literature.
- Train students to bring their close-reading and analytical thinking skills to texts published in different languages and in translation.
- Serve as an intellectual bridge between the departments of English, Modern Languages & Literatures, and Classics.
