The Department of Classics has four tenured or tenure-track faculty: Professors Carolin Hahnemann and Adam Serfass, Associate Professor Zoë Sophia Kontes and Assistant Professor Micah Myers (on leave in 2020-21). Visiting Assistant Professor Liana Brent joins us in 2020-2022. Additionally, Assistant Professor Michael Barich annually teaches four courses. Professor Emeritus William McCulloh offers a tutorial in Sanskrit. Two more emeriti round out the full roster of the department: Robert Bennett, a resident of Gambier, and Cliff Weber, who lives in Tokyo, Japan.
Small classes in the languages foster close ties between students and faculty, and larger classes in classical civilization allow the department to engage a broad range of students in the study of the ancient Mediterranean. The department has been recognized for the high quality of its instruction: faculty members have received Whiting Teaching Fellowships, Kenyon’s Trustee Teaching Excellence Awards, and the Society for Classical Studies’ Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Classics.
