A survey of American photographs from the mid-19th century to the present.
"Daguerreotype to Digital: American Photography" surveys how photographic images have contributed to the visual culture of the United States between the mid-nineteenth century and today.
From fine art and documentary evidence to science and portraiture, photographs have served many different purposes, yet viewers will note the aesthetics employed across these genres are not mutually exclusive. As a result, developing meaning out of an individual photographic image requires the consideration of multiple factors, including presentational context, historical era and supplementary text.
This exhibition is organized by Professor Erin Corrales-Diaz, Marilyn Yarbrough dissertation fellow and visiting instructor of art history, and Professor Austin Porter, postdoctoral fellow, Center for the Study of American Democracy and visiting assistant professor of history.
This exhibition is supported by Library and Information Services: Greenslade Special Collections & Archives and by the Department of Art History.
