3-D Printing
The Visual Resources Center offers access to 3-D modeling and printing, not only for art history, but in disciplines across the curriculum.
VRC Assistants
Every year about ten student assistants work on a variety of projects at the Visual Resources Center. They receive training in the methods of digitizing slides, editing digital images, cataloging materials, uploading imagery and textual data to servers, 3-D modeling and printing, large-format printing and more.
Project Work
In the Visual Resources Center, there are usually five to six on-going projects being worked on by student assistants.
Collections
The Visual Resources Center contains the Denis Baly Slide Collection, the Boris Blick Study Collection, the Barker Newhall Photographic Collection and the Zhou Yan Contemporary Chinese Art Archive.
The Visual Resources Collection is a both a department and collegiate resource for investigating works of art, architecture, material and visual culture under Visual Resources Curator Yan Zhou.
The VRC is a collegiate and departmental Resource assists with locating, producing, and researching visual images. These include:
- Researching, cataloging, scanning, and uploading to public databases (e.g. Digital Kenyon) any set of visual images for any department or program at Kenyon College
- Printing objects/designs using a one-or-full-color 3-D printer
- Projects using 3-D modeling including photogrammetry, SketchUp, and Blender
- Large format printing, focusing especially on high-quality photographic prints
- The Boris Blick Study Collection with pieces of artwork and cultural objects that may be checked out by Kenyon College faculty
- Exhibition spaces for Art History courses utilizing object-based learning, student-curated shows, and hands-on demonstrations
- Center for student-generated and faculty-guided art-historical research
Access to a number of Historical Resources, including ancient objects, early modern prints, archival slides, and image collections. The VRC houses the following collections:
- The Boris Blick Study Collection with over 400 pieces dating from antiquity through the current day.
- Denis Baly (late Religious Studies Professor at Kenyon) Collection of about 10,000 color slides, focusing on the Near East, left to the College when he died in 1987.
- Barker Newhall (late Classics Professor at Kenyon) Collection of Greek and Roman monuments. This consists of about 600 mounted and labeled 19th-century photographs, left to the College when he died in 1923.
- The Carnegie collection (about 2000 mounted and labeled photographs), donated to the college by the Carnegie Foundation c. 1928.
- Art History Department Collection of Lantern Slides of about 400 early 20th-century large glass slides and lantern slide projector.
Access and Hours
The Visual Resources Center is located on the first floor of the Graham Gund Gallery, room 111. The hours during the academic year are:
Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., 1 - 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., 1 - 3 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday: closed
Student Employment
Kenyon College employs between five to ten students every year to work in the Visual Resources Center. Students receive basic training in the methods of digital photography, digitizing slides, editing digital images, uploading the images to servers,3-D printing and modeling, plus learning how to research and catalog art-historical, all of which further the goals of integrating Visual Resources into academic life at Kenyon.
