Construction of new playing field begins
Work is scheduled to begin next week on the new synthetic playing field that will serve field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and several club and intramural sports next fall. The new field will be constructed along Duff Street just west of the Kenyon Athletic Center (KAC), in the area known as the Benson Bowl, and will include a reworking of nearby sidewalks to ease the walk up the hill to South Campus.
Contractors will begin installing fencing around the construction area the week of March 4. Pedestrians should use the sidewalk along Duff Street to access the KAC during the construction.
As part of the site preparations, 15 small trees will be transplanted to other areas of campus. Four mature trees will be removed, three of which are either unhealthy or dying. The trees will be replaced as part of Kenyon’s tree-care plan.
The community is asked to exercise care as trucks enter and exit the construction area.
The construction is expected to be completed in August.
North College Road from Wiggin Street to the Science Quad will remain closed through Sunday to allow additional cure time for the new concrete pavement. North College Road will reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 11.
North College Road from Wiggin Street to the Science Quad will be closed to all traffic Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9.
Construction traffic combined with the recent freeze thaw cycles have resulted in rapid deterioration of the North College Road pavement. Crews will be working Friday and Saturday to remove damaged sections of pavement and replace them with concrete.
The road closure will start at 2 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 8. The road is expected to reopen on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 7 a.m. All vehicles parked along North College Road will need to be removed by 2 a.m. on Feb 8. Vehicles remaining after repair work starts will not be able to exit past the repairs.
Village Construction Updates

Farr Hall Demolition Begins: Demolition of Farr Hall will begin Monday, April 2, in the next phase of construction in the Village. Roads will remain open, and personnel will direct traffic as trucks and excavation equipment enter the fenced construction site from Brooklyn Street. The process is expected to take approximately four weeks.
The building is undergoing professional asbestos abatement this week to prevent any of the material from becoming airborn during the demolition. Older buildings containing asbestos do not pose a health risk unless they are renovated or torn down, at which point abatement is required to prevent asbestos fibers from becoming airborn where they can be inhaled. The abatement of Farr Hall will be completed tomorrow.
The phased downtown revitalization plan has improved access to Middle Path, added new apartments for students and increased modern retail space, such as the new Village Market on Chase Avenue and the renovated Kenyon Bookstore. In the next stage of the project, crews are demolishing Farr Hall to replace it with smaller mixed-use buildings offering retail and restaurant space, with student residences above.
Some of the retail spaces built this spring will serve as temporary student study spaces during the construction of the Kenyon Commons library that begins this fall. The Gambier Deli will occupy one of the retail spaces, and another space will open in the fall as a restaurant and bar called Chilitos Fresh Mex and Margaritas. Chilitos will include outdoor seating in the courtyard behind Farr that was formed by the completion of the Unity and Snowden student residence buildings last summer. The student apartments being built in the Gaskin Avenue retail buildings are scheduled to be ready for the spring of 2019.
Laundry Facility Reopens: The laundry facility below the Bookstore has reopened. The facility, which was closed during the Bookstore renovation, includes eight coin-operated washers and eight dryers and is located on the east side of the building.
Modular Units Arrive: The modular units that will house interim library services and provide student study space during the construction of the new Kenyon Commons library will arrive in sections next week, starting Monday, March 26. Twenty-three 12’ x 60’ sections will be transported by trucks and assembled on site. Trucks will make deliveries twice daily on March 26 - 28, between 11 a.m. and noon and between 3 and 4 p.m. Additional deliveries to Ransom Lawn and the area next to Watson are expected on March 29 and 30. Campus Safety will direct traffic as trucks arrive on College Park Street to enter the fenced area on Ransom Lawn and unload each unit. Parking areas at the Church of the Holy Spirit and Peirce and Ascension halls will remain open. Assembly of the buildings, three on Ransom Lawn and one next to Watson, is expected to be complete by Friday afternoon.
Conduit Work: Construction crews will excavate several areas on campus to install power and fiber optic cable conduits between March 26 and April 20. The conduit work must be carried out during the semester in order to relocate the College’s library services from Olin to the interim library space in June.
The work includes five phases, each lasting approximately four days. During each phase, construction crews will fence off a designated area, excavate a four-foot deep trench, install the conduit, and restore and reseed the area (view map).
Pedestrians should navigate around the affected areas, using alternate paths and walkways as needed.
Tentative Excavation Schedule:
March 26-29 Phase 1: Between Cromwell and Gund Gallery
March 30 - April 4 Phase 2: In front of Gund Gallery and Olin Library
April 5-10 Phase 3: Between Olin and Rosse Hall
April 11-16 Phase 4: Back entrance to Storer
Construction Project Manager Seth Millam will share construction updates should schedules change.
Inside the Future Kenyon Commons Library: View a rendering of the atrium in Kenyon's future library, scheduled for completion in August 2020.
Village Construction Continues: With the renovated Kenyon Bookstore set to reopen this Friday, the next phase of the Village revitalization begins. Construction of new retail and student living spaces will mean temporary changes to vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Gaskin Avenue (see map). Beginning Monday, March 19, construction crews will:
Demolition work on Farr Hall is scheduled to begin the last week in March. Farr will be replaced by several smaller, mixed-use buildings, offering retail and restaurant space with student residences above. The Gambier Deli will occupy one of the spaces and Chilitos, a new restaurant, will be located on the ground floor of the middle building, facing the former location of the Gambier Grill. Other retail spaces being built this spring will serve as temporary student study spaces during the upcoming construction of the Kenyon Commons library.
Bookstore Celebration: Join President Sean Decatur and Bookstore Manager Angus MacDonell for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of the Kenyon College Bookstore on Thursday, March 22, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. The symbolic purple ribbon cutting will follow a short program. Refreshments will be provided including cake, lemonade and iced tea. The Bookstore resumes business in its new location today, March 16.
Two manholes are scheduled to be installed in the section of Middle Path between Sam Mather and Ascension Hall beginning on Wednesday, March 7, with an anticipated completion date of Friday, March 9.
This section of the path will be closed for the duration of construction. Pedestrian traffic will be diverted via barricades to the ancillary paths on the east and west sides of Middle Path.
Site Preparation for Interim Library Services Begins: Work begins March 5 to prepare Ransom Lawn and the area next to Watson Hall for four temporary modular units that will house library services and provide study space during construction of the new Kenyon Commons library. Construction crews will install temporary fencing around both areas and establish access points for utilities and the Kenyon network. In addition, five trees — four ginkgo trees on Ward Street between Brooklyn Street and the Lewis/Gund parking lot and a hollow basswood tree between the Norton/Gund and Watson lots — will be removed so that one of the units can be transported from Ward Street to the Watson lot. The trees will be replaced as part of Kenyon's tree-care plan. The modular units will begin arriving the week of March 21 and construction is expected to last until mid-May.
Three modular units on Ransom Lawn, totaling approximately 14,000 square feet, will host the library’s core services, including circulation, research and reference, Helpline, special collections and archives, public printers, periodicals, new books, computer workstations, and study spaces. The Bloomberg terminal and the current Mac computers from the metamedia lab will also be available in these units.
The fourth space, a 3,000-square-foot modular building between Watson and Norton halls, will provide seating for approximately 105 students. Other interim study spaces have been planned throughout the campus and village when construction on the Kenyon Commons begins this August.
Related work during spring break includes the installation of fiber conduits between Middle Path and Higley and Ascension Halls. The new conduits will connect to an existing underground fiber conduit system beneath Middle Path. A section of Middle Path between Ascension and Higley will be closed while the work is completed, and foot traffic will be directed along mulch pathways. The conduit installation should be complete by the end of spring break.
Bookstore Move Scheduled for Spring Break: As renovations to the Kenyon Bookstore near completion, the Bookstore will close March 12-15 to move to its permanent home on the south end of Farr Hall. Those with newspaper subscriptions can pick up their newspapers on those days from the current location. Bookstore operations are expected to resume by March 16.
Refresh for Ransom's First Floor. Work to refurbish the first-floor area of Ransom Hall begins today, February 5. The six-week project is scheduled for completion before the spring visit season. Signage will direct visitors to access the building through the adjacent Stephens Hall entrance, and the admissions desk will be moved temporarily to the Norton Room while the work is underway.
The project includes updated furnishings for the visitors’ lobby, the Norton Room and several office areas and will refresh the space in ways that will benefit current and future occupants of the historic building. The current furnishings date from 1995.
Originally known as the Alumni Library, Ransom Hall was built in 1910 and renamed in 1962 to honor John Crowe Ransom, the founding editor of the Kenyon Review. Throughout its history, it has served as home to a variety of offices and services, including the library, the office of the president, the provost, and admissions.
The admissions office will continue to occupy Ransom and Stephens halls for approximately three-and-a-half years, at which point it will relocate to the West Quad. The College will then determine a future use for Ransom in keeping with its historic significance and location.
Parking plans during West Quad construction take shape: In preparation for the West Quad construction project, the College has developed an interim parking plan that will take effect in June 2018. The plan includes the construction of an additional south parking lot for students. The Village Zoning Commission approved plans on Dec. 19 for the 145-space parking area next to the outdoor tennis courts. The additional student parking will allow the College to designate the Peirce lot as well as the parking areas near Lewis, Norton and the northwest side of Bexley for employees during the West Quad construction (see map). Specific changes include:
Employees
Students
Visitors
The Olin and Chalmers parking lot will close in June 2018 as library materials are moved to the storage building under construction on the east edge of the athletic facilities. The libraries will be demolished in the fall of 2018. Construction of the new Kenyon Commons library on the same location will take about two years, and the construction of the 268-space parking garage underneath the new West Quad is expected to be completed in 2021.
