The College Collection and Public Art Committee at Kenyon is responsible for reviewing proposals to display artwork in public locations on campus. The committee includes faculty, staff, alumni and students appointed by President Sean Decatur.
The committee was formed in March 2018, when President Sean Decatur has announced the merger of two committees formerly managed by the Gund Gallery into one body and chaired by a member of the president’s staff.
Responsibilities of the College Collection and Public Art Committee include, but are not necessarily limited to, the conservation of existing campus art and the possible acquisition, through donations or purchases, of new items for the collection. The committee, which will provide guidance on the placement of such gifts for exterior or interior display, is also in charge of reviewing and recommending approval or denial of proposals for public art installations anywhere on campus. (Those considering such installations are invited to peruse the “Public Art Proposal Form,” which provides detailed information on the various requirements for a successful proposal.)
Among the matters to be taken up by the committee this semester, in addition to any proposals for temporary or permanent art installations, will be planning for cleaning and restoration of the College’s many portraits of Kenyon benefactors and presidents and for determining the best places in which to display them.
